Firefighters honored at annual banquet
By SHERREE GREBENSTEIN
MARTINSBURG — People from all walks of life were honored Saturday night by the Hedgesville Volunteer Fire Company at the company's annual awards banquet.
Now in its 51st year, the appreciation banquet lauded businesses and individuals who have given not only monetary contributions to the efforts of the volunteer firefighters, but also donations of their time and talent. Whether it be providing food to hungry first responders while battling a crisis or helping with fundraisers, all were saluted for their efforts.

George Mulligan, chairman of the department's appreciation committee, said 200 people were invited to the awards banquet, including U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va. The senator was not only given a certificate of appreciation, but a gold firefighter badge making him an honorary member of the Hedgesville Volunteer Fire Company.
He asked when he should report for duty and then remembered that as a volunteer he would always be on call.
"I think the world of you and am proud of you," he told the volunteer firefighters and emergency medical services personnel from the Hedgesville company.
