Kureha Breaks Ground for New Plant

BELLE -- Through much of the 20th century, the DuPont plant in Belle was known for its production of nylon.
Now, a Japanese company wants the area to be known for production of another revolutionary product.
Kureha PGA LLC became the 20th Japanese company to invest in West Virginia when officials broke ground April 7, on a plant that will produce polyglycolic acid, or PGA. The new polymer soon could change the way plastic beverage containers and other products are made, said Takao Iwasaki, president and CEO of the company.

Japanese companies, including Kureha, are attracted to West Virginia because of the personable people here and their strong work ethic, Rockefeller said. He touted the 1 percent average turnover rate at the Toyota plant in Buffalo as evidence. Now that Kureha has committed to West Virginia, officials will be committed to them, he said.
