SHEPHERDSTOWN — Joined by his wife, Sharon, children, grandchildren and supporters, Sen. Jay D. Rockefeller IV traveled to Shepherd University Sunday to announce his plans to seek a fifth term in the U.S. Senate.
A member of the Senate since 1985, the 70-year-old Democrat and chairman of the Select Committee on Intelligence made the announcement in Shepherdstown as part of several recent re-election campaign kickoff events across West Virginia .
“I'm running because of my passion for this state and I guess, most importantly, for the people of this state, for their hard work, for their sacrifice, for the agony of defeat, the occasional ecstasy of success and what it means to be treated fairly as a human being,” said Rockefeller, who closed his remarks with the belief that the conditions of the state were improving. “I'm very optimistic about West Virginia ... I think things are moving in our direction. We are a people who fight. We've had to. Nothing is given to us. Everything we have is earned.”
In a speech before his supporters, Rockefeller said his more than 40 years of public service have given him a sense of meaning in his life that he calls his moral compass. In the absence of those family members that surrounded him on the stage, he said he has discovered during his career in public service that his real family are the people of West Virginia.
